In the latest installment of Apple’s iPhone security-related patent filings, the Cupertino-based company describes the implementation of loss prevention software that would notify a security agency in the event the handset is lost or stolen, which could in turn lead to a police officer being dispatched to the current location of the device based on GPS coordinates.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Apple’s iPhone has emerged as a serious videogame platform, fulfilling the long-held promise of mobile phone gaming and positioning itself as a legitimate competitor to handheld consoles.

The Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last week was abuzz with plans about games for the iPhone and its WiFi-only cousin, the iPod touch.

With around 30 million devices on the market — 17 million iPhones and 13 million iPod Touches — and access to thousands of games at their slightest whim, consumers are buying and playing games by the tens of millions.

The buzz at CTIA 09 this week is all about the BlackBerry App World, the iPhone 3.0, and the imminent arrival of the Palm Pre, but those are all primarily U.S.-focused stories. There is a bigger story unfolding, however—one that has been largely overlooked by the tech press. That story is the phenomenal effect that widespread cell-phone proliferation is having on the developing world. Once upon a time, PCs were the primary tools for connecting to the Internet, with programs like One Laptop Per Child being conceived to harness their power. Globally, the mobile phone is now the primary communication tool. This shift has had a stunning impact on developing nations, the wireless industry, and even the Internet itself.

Samsung Telecommunications America announced the first WiMax-enabled Mobile Internet Device (MID) today at the International CTIA Wireless conference.

Called the Mondi, the touch-screen, pocket-size device is designed for use on the Clear mobile WiMax network from Clearwire, Samsung officials announced on Tuesday evening. Mondi derives its name from the Latin word for “world.”
